IMTIAZ ALI'S TOP 2!

Imtiaz Ali's movies are like a threshold of stories that every character in his movies exhibits not through pompous dialogues, not through over-dramatic potrayal of the emotions, but simply through the unscripted actions of the characters. Every character is like a book, telling stories as the pages of the movies unfolds. Every character has a different story to tell; all stories make up his movies. Every movie grows more on me after each watch. His movies are like works of poetry, once his work of making one is over, they are left to interpretations by the audience:every viewer carries his own stories, feeling the movie as their own. I have picked two of my favorite Imtiaz Ali films, which are different in their own ways.

#1 HIGHWAY

Thirst for freedom maybe considered as the central theme of the film. The movie takes us through an intriguing journey mirroring the lives of two individuals, Mahabir, a man belonging to the lower class of the society who lives by committing minor burglaries and Veera, a girl belonging to the so called "elite-class". What binds the two characters is the grief of the lost innocence, unaware, both share a deep understanding of the pain that each holds within them. Mahabir abducts Veera, and the abduction takes Veera through different cities and towns and it is on one of the highways that she realises, amidst all the confusion that she bears in her head, that she just loves the path that her life in moving on. It is, in a way, a very subtle celebration of the discovery of love, freedom and oneself as they start their journey from a highway itself, thus justifying the title of the movie.

#2 TAMASHA

It is the story of a man who lives in the grips of what the society binds him to. He is the being of awe within himself being constantly rubbed to rust by the title of an "average-going" individual that the society imposes on him. Tara who happens to meet him on her vacation to Corsica, discovers the story-teller within him. She tries to push out the real Ved which dwells within the facade of what the society has created. Once in a while do we meet people in our lives who take the best out of us and help us discover ourselves. Tara is that "one person" in Veds life, giving birth to a playwright within him.
